Running Gemini CLI from your phone
Gemini CLI is the one most people try first, because the free tier is real. That also makes it the one most likely to be left running while you walk away.

What Gemini CLI is
Google’s open-source terminal coding agent. It reads and writes files, runs commands, and asks before doing either. Signing in with a Google account gets you a free tier that is generous enough for real work, which is why it tends to be the first agent people install and the last one they uninstall.
It speaks the Agent Client Protocol, the same standard Zed uses for external agents — so a client can drive it over a real protocol rather than by reading its terminal output.
Gemini CLI vs Claude Code
| Gemini CLI | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to start | Free tier with a Google account | Paid from the first token |
| Source | Open source | Closed |
| Context | Very large context window | Large, with aggressive compaction |
| Best when | You want to try agentic coding without a bill | You want the current strongest coding model and will pay for it |
Both are driven the same way from the phone, and both can be installed at once — VibePager lists whichever are present.
Setting it up
- Have Gemini CLI installed and signed in on your Mac or PC, the way you already run it.
- Install VibePager on the same machine. It finds the agents that are there and lists only those.
- Open
vibepager.com/appon your phone, pair once with the code shown on the computer, pick a folder, and start.
Why the free tier makes remote control more useful, not less
A free agent is one you leave running on a long refactor without worrying about the meter. That is precisely the situation where you walk away from the desk — and where an agent that quietly stopped to ask permission twenty minutes ago costs you the whole afternoon. The notification is worth more here than on the expensive agent you watch closely.
What is the same for every agent
- Gemini CLI runs on your machine, on your files, with your own account or API key. Nothing is uploaded.
- Phone-to-machine traffic is end-to-end encrypted; the relay in the middle has no key.
- You choose which folders the phone is allowed to open.
- The app lists only the agents actually installed — an agent you do not have never shows up as a broken option.
- One subscription covers up to 3 computers and 6 phones or browsers.
Questions
- Can I run Gemini CLI remotely?
- Yes. It runs on your own machine and the phone sends tasks and answers its permission prompts. SSH into the machine works too, with a terminal keyboard instead of buttons.
- Is Gemini CLI free?
- There is a free tier with a personal Google account, with daily limits; paid API keys and Google Cloud projects lift them. VibePager does not change any of that — it uses your existing sign-in.
- Gemini CLI vs Claude Code?
- Gemini CLI is open source with a free tier; Claude Code is closed and paid but generally stronger on hard coding tasks. Install both and switch per conversation.
- Does my code go to Google?
- Whatever Gemini CLI already sends to Google’s API, it keeps sending — that is between you and Google, unchanged. VibePager adds nothing: it carries your tasks and decisions to the machine, end-to-end encrypted, and keeps no copy of your project.
VibePager runs the agents on your own machine and puts the controls on your phone.
